An analysis of all IGI records for England (admittedly not fully comprehensive) reveal some unexpected facts.  We did not start out as a Yorkshire family despite the fact that in the 19th and 20th centuries the vast majority of Westmoreland families in the United Kingdom were born in Yorkshire.

The earliest Westmoreland family recorded in the IGI was in London in the Ludgate area where two families were having children baptised at St Martin's Church in the mid-16th century.
Thomas WESTMERLANDE, origin unknown, had the following children baptised:
  • 1553 son Walter (Wat)
  • 1563 dau. Tymothie
  • 1564 dau. Johane
  • 1567 son Giles
  • 1573 son William
John WESTMERLANDE, probably brother of Thomas, had the following children baptised:
  • 1556 dau. Alis
  • 1560 dau. Isabell

ALSO, eleven Westmoreland baptisms are recorded in the Lincolnshire IGI in the 16th century

Edmond WESTMORLAND (spelt
variously) had the following children in
Normanby-le-Wold and nearby
  • 1575 dau. Marye
  • 1577 dau. Katherine
  • 1580 dau. Jane
  • 1588 dau. Alice
  • 1591 son Robte
  • 1592 dau. Elizabeth
  • 1594 dau Anne
  • 1596 son Thomas
John WESTMERLAND had the
following children baptised in
  • 1595 dau. Susanna
  • 1597 dau. Elizabeth
  • 1599 son John
  • Other than these, the only further16th-century Westmoreland baptism recorded by the IGI  was in Great Shefford, Berkshire (Robert, son of Robert, 1592).

  • There is so far no evidence of where this William came from, or where he went thereafter, but the PR has not yet been checked
  • In 1691 William Wesmerland son of Phillip Wesmerland, "a stranger", was christened at Barwick-in-Elmet (the first of three sons found so far)
  • In 1702 a Helena Westmoreland married Joshua Wait in Barwick-in-Elmet
